Hey Tailgaters!

Hey Tailgaters,

Welcome to May!  Finally, a little warmer weather.  I am not one for cold for three reasons:  First, I prefer warm over cold. Secondly, it’s more fun to get outside and throw some steaks on the grill when it’s warm outside.  Third, see the first reason again!

May is a bittersweet month.  The weather really begins to break as indecisive April gives way to beautiful days.  But May also ends with Memorial Day.  While most look forward to the three-day weekend for barbecue and horseshoes, we must not lose sight of what Memorial Day is really about – remembering the over 2,760,000 Americans who through the years gave their lives in battle for our country.  We must not ever forget the sacrifices of men and women who won our freedom.  From the Revolutionary War to our current War on Terror, young men and women are answering the call to defend our freedom all over the world.  On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, take a moment to reflect on these American brothers and sisters.  Visit a cemetery or help your local Boy Scouts put flags on veteran’s graves.  Knock on the door of a vet in your neighborhood or of a widow of someone who gave the ultimate sacrifice.  Whether they died in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Gulf War or the current war, it really is our duty to comfort them, be with them, bake for them and to simply say, “Thank You.”

On this Memorial Day, fly your United States flag at half mast in the morning.  Then, as is the policy of our nation, bring it to full mast at noon.  It’s another way to show your respect and appreciation for our fallen servicemen and women.

This truly is a solemn issue as we also remember Matthew Hurte, the son of columnist Bobby Hurte who passed away suddenly last month.  Take a moment to read the remembrance in our Columnist section.  Matthew was a great kid and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Have you ever been to a barbecue competition and not been able to sample the barbecue?  Well if so, we’re hear for you as we searched far and wide and found a great place for championship barbecue sauce!  Check out our feature on Saucehog.com in this month’s Features section.

Americans are the most charitable people on the planet.  And we prove it again with the NASCAR Foundation’s Track Walk series.  They raise thousands of dollars for local charities and make it a fun day to boot!  Also, we bring you a new recurring feature where we present new tailgating gizmos and equipment that will make your tailgate even better!  Check out the new spring stuff in our New Tailgating Products for Spring article.  Its chock full of tailgating gear that we've come across recently here in our northeast corporate offices.  Out on the west coast, West Coast Bureau Chief Jay DiEugenio also checks in with what's come across his tailgate desk in The Tailgate Guy’s Top Tailgate Toys.

And don’t forget our tips, recipes and all the regular stuff!

Happy Tailgating!
