Don't Drink & Drive!

Often we have tips in this space that help you have a great party in the parking lot.  Here’s one where we want you to have a great time getting home from the party

Know your limits when it comes to alcohol.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) says it's not game day fun they are discouraging. It's people who don't have a plan.  This is quite frankly a great idea.

We all like to have our cold ones at the tailgate.  That is something that is very much a part of tailgating.  But it’s a good idea to follow a few simple rules and then everybody gets home safe and sound.

  1. Don’t Be Stupid – Have a plan and follow these rules.  PEOPLE YOU LOVE make up your tailgate.  And people who are loved are killed all the time by drivers who have had too much to drink.  Think about that long and hard as you are planning your tailgate.

  2. Have a Designated Driver – This one is a no brainer!  If you go to eight games a year, then everybody should get at least one turn as the designated driver.  If that means they drink but then stop at the beginning of the game, they should be sober enough to drive by the time you start to drive home.  (This depends on how much they’ve had – hopefully as the Designated Driver they’ve limited it!  If they can’t limit it, then they should have NO alcohol!)

  3. Eat When You Drink – this is no brainer # 2 – If you do nothing but drink, you won’t have any food to absorb the alcohol, and you’ll have more room to drink more.  You’ll enjoy your tailgate a heck of a lot more if you aren’t drunk and stupid.  Even if you are not the Designated Driver, having a beer should help you enjoy the tailgate, not be the sole purpose of the tailgate.

  4. Have Your Last One at the Start of the Third Quarter – If you’ve been enjoying some frosted beverages throughout the day, switch to a non-alcoholic drink during the 3rd quarter of the game.  This will give your body a chance to digest the adult beverages a good few hours before you head home.

If you have someone in your tailgate party who regularly drinks too much, stand up and talk to them prior to going to the tailgate.  You will have great tailgates for years and years – make sure all the gang will be there to enjoy them!

Remember:  Don’t Drink and Drive – You could kill someone you love, or someone who is loved.

If you have tips to share on this or any other tailgating subject, we'd love to share them with the rest of the team in the parking lot!  Send them to editor@TheTailgater.com!
